CVHS Grad To Host Nationwide MSNBC Show
By Robert Souza
If you’re watching the Democratic National Convention on MSNBC this week, you’re likely to see political commentator Rachel Maddow, who grew up in Castro Valley.
“Rachel has, and always had, tremendous energy,” said her mom, Castro Valley resident Elaine Maddow in an interview at The Forum office Friday. “We keep saying to ourselves who is that kid and where did she come from?”
Elaine and Rachel’s Father Robert both agree it is somewhat surreal to see their daughter on national television. “It’s all incredible, and we are very proud of her,” said Robert. |

Village Bowling Alley Keeps the Ball Rolling
By Amber Simons
About a hundred people show
up nightly for events at the Castro
Village Bowl, says employee
Jamie Gorham. Thursday, Friday
and Saturday nights are the busiest.
The bowling alley’s nightly
specials are what drives the
crowds. With bowling as low as
$8 on Monday nights for shoes
and unlimited games, “the price
is just right,” says Jennifer
Hepworth, 18, of Castro Valley.
“And you can relax and have a
good time.”

Volvo S80 Blends Technology, Tradition
By Steve Schaefer
Volvo’s flagship sedan,
the S80, got
redone for the 2007
model year, but it
took until now to get a date with
one — a beautiful 2008 model.
It was worth the wait.
By now, the Volvo-as-box
image has faded from public perception.
When the first S80 arrived
years ago, it was a revolution,
with a return to traditional
“shoulders” but otherwise a
modern, even daring, approach
to sedan design, with a laid-back
rear window, tapered rear deck
and tucked-in side panels. The
blunt, medallion-wearing grille
was squeezed down to a slender
strip. The same fresh approach
was applied to the interior, as
well.

New Surgical Tonsil Procedure for Children, Teens
By Mark Zeme, M.D.
Because pediatricians have
been reluctant to recommend
tonsillectomies during the past
few decades, parents often assume
that their young children
will outgrow tonsil problems.
Unfortunately, not all children
do, and when infections and obstruction
recur in teens or even
adults, the tonsils need to be
taken out.

Adults, Doctors Should Not Ignore Pain Signals
By Darien Behravan, D.O.
Because persistent pain is a
common experience among
older adults, it is often dismissed
as a normal part of aging. As the
American Geriatrics Society
(AGS) points out, however, pain
is neither normal nor healthy, and
complaints about pain should
never be minimized or passively
accepted.
